Speech Therapy for Adults at Home in Houston, Texas

The inability to communicate clearly is perhaps the most debilitating part of a serious injury, illness, or disease. When we lose our ability to communicate, we lose our ability to make our needs known, respond to the needs of those we love, and clarify any frustration that comes when those needs aren’t met. CASA Healthcare is dedicated to improving our patients’ essential connections to the world around them by providing convenient and effective speech therapy at home. Speech and language therapy is often prescribed by attending doctors in response to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs, such as those sustained in car accidents), strokes, severe concussions, and for patients with degenerative conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s. This can be for several reasons, including:

  • Regaining and retaining the ability to speak clearly. This first reason is the most obvious. If you can speak clearly, you can communicate your needs and ideas with other people, from your friends and family to your caregivers or grocery cashiers. With today’s technology, speaking well can also make it possible for you to use voice-activated accessibility tools so you can be more independent in other ways, as long as your words are clear.
  • Improving the ability to swallow. Swallowing and speaking are very closely tied. Improvement of one often results in improvement of the other. If a speech therapist treats your ability to swallow, you can use more conventional forms of eating and also improve your ability to speak overall. If our speech therapists can help you eat, our dietary counseling services can also help you decide what to eat to get and stay healthy.
  • Clarifying slurred speech. Slurred speech is just one symptom affecting a patient’s ability to connect, but it can be a critical barrier in being understood. Slurred speech is also a frequent consequence of brain injuries, so working on that concern is a key aspect of maximum recovery from your injury.
  • Improving cognition. Relearning or protecting how to speak with your mouth doesn’t help much if your brain doesn’t keep up. This is why speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are also trained to help you learn memory retention strategies and other thinking techniques to overcome cognitive challenges. Keeping your mind sharp is a big part of the overall picture of a fulfilling life, and CASA Healthcare is dedicated to helping you find and keep that life.
